Swimmers, surfers and beach bums flock to the white sandy beaches of Australia, but not to Port Phillip Bay in Melbourne. In addition to being covered in syringes and broken glass, environmentalists say the beach is contaminated with toxin-laden microplastics called “nurdles” which look like small fish eggs floating on the surface of the water. Although scientists can’t pinpoint exactly where they are coming from, they say Melbourne citizens can help by not throwing their plastic on the ground.
