Robben Island Prison Museum – South Africa
Since the 17th Century, Robben Island has been used as isolation for political prisoners, and later lepers. From 1961 onward, there was a prison to house political prisoners and convicted criminals, and a maximum security prison for political prisoners until 1991. The medium security prison for criminals was closed in 1996. Nelson Mandela was kept at Robben Island, and today it is a symbol of the triumph of the human spirit over adversity.
