It may be out of the way, but Uzbekistan has emerged as one of the hottest destinations of the year because it’s remote and unspoiled. The Uzbekistani cities of Bukhara and Samarkland were once major stops on the Silk Road, and these cities still retain a large portion of their historical architecture which was built during this period.

For the last 27 years, Uzbekistan was under the leadership of authoritarian dictator Islam Karimov, but new president Shavkat Mirziyoyev, who was sworn in in 2016, has already taken positive steps towards bringing Uzbekistan into the modern world, and has flung open its borders to tourism.
