Mini Guide to New Zealand
Franz Josef Glacier is located in the South Island on the west coast, near Franz Josef Town (around five km away). The town itself is home to just under 400 people, but can accommodate up to 2,000 during the high season.
The glacier is 12 km long and a mesmerizing place to visit. Travelers can explore it via guided walks or, for those with some spare money, a helicopter tour.
A common activity after a long hiking day is to relax at the in hot pools in town.
Milford Sound
Milford Sound is one of New Zealand’s most famous destinations attracting between 550 thousand to one million visitors every year. It runs 15 km inland, all the way from the Tasman Sea and is surrounded by rock faces of 1,200 meters.
The area is one of the wettest in New Zealand, and the constant rainfall creates hundreds of waterfalls running down the rocks. It’s also frequented by seals, penguins, bottlenose dolphins, and humpback whales. Most travelers go on boat tours, but it’s also possible to go canoeing or tramping in the hills.
