Visiting Venice: How to Fall for a Cliched City

Libreria Acqua Alta

Libreria Acqua Alta is a charming bookstore situated down one of Venice’s many twisting alleys. Out front, you can browse old prints and art in the boxes under a rare tree. Inside, the shop backs a canal (literally–that’s the fire exit). Prominently in the center is a gondola overflowing with books. In the back courtyard, you can climb a staircase made of books to enjoy the view down the canal.

These books are mostly second-hand, and there are some great finds if you have time to browse. The shop owner, who will eagerly show off the various quirks to you, normally sits near the entrance with one of many cats. He’s a delightful flirt and as eccentric as his store. Definitely worth the visit!
