Visiting Venice: How to Fall for a Cliched City

Crowd-Avoiding Tips

The biggest way to avoid the crowds is to go in the winter. As is sadly the truth in most places, tourist season comes with people. Lots and lots and lots of people.

I recommend going in February, a week or two before Carnival. When the sun is out, the weather is pleasantly warm and comfortable. But even when it rains, it’s not completely wretched. My friend and I encountered almost no lines at all during our entire stay, which was very unusual according to others’ accounts!

If you do go during a crowded season, there are still ways to get free of the press:

  • Go early. Everything on Venice seems to operate on island time, so nothing opens especially early in the morning. But be there when it does open, and you’ll avoid a lot of the lines.
  • Likewise, if you can bear it, dawn is one of the most quiet and magical times to explore the city.
  • Get off the main streets. As I mentioned in the art of wandering, if you find ways to loop around the main thoroughfares, you will avoid getting squished.
