Houska Castle – Czech Republic

This 13th century castle located in the Czech Republic is particularly interesting as it doesn’t appear to have been built for any defensive purpose — rather, it’s said to have been built to close a gateway to hell.

The stories say the castle’s chapel is built on a bottomless pit from which demons, winged creatures and creatures that appeared as half-man, half-beast are to have emerged. The strangeness doesn’t end there. During the 1930s, Nazis took over Houska castle to perform occult experiments on portals. During renovations, several Nazi officer skeletons were found, and they appeared to have all been killed execution style.
