Predjama Castle – Slovenia
This unique castle was built into a cave and juts from the side of a 123 meter high cliff. It was once the home of robber baron Erasmus the Knight, who rebelled against the monarchy in the 15th century. Erasmus the Knight was the cruel master of the castle, and he frequently used secret passages through the cliff to come and go from the castle. He tortured and killed many people within the castle; some prisoners were bricked up behind walls, or thrown alive into a deep pit and left to die of their injuries.
