A favorite among its enthusiasts, cassava also has serious potential to cause severe and violent illness and death. Proper attention and meticulous preparation are necessary to ensure cassava is safe to consume.

A tropical root, cassava is grown in parts of Asia, South America, and Africa. It’s heavily imported and is often used to make cakes, chips, desserts, and a unique form of flour. When prepared incorrectly, traces of residual cyanide may remain and cause ataxia or paralysis in the individual when consumed. To prepare cassava for safe ingestion, it must be peeled, sliced, and cooked thoroughly. It can be baked, boiled, or roasted. This process is essential in order to remove and sufficiently extract the harmful elements inherently found within this tropical crop.

You would be surprised by how much taste preferences vary between cultures. Some foods are so appetizing that even though they may pose a serious risk towards health, people will still do whatever it takes to eat them!
