Iceland isn’t just home to natural hot springs and eerily beautiful landscapes; it’s also home to some of the happiest people on earth, despite also having among the highest birth rate and highest divorce rates. What gives? Some say its social progressiveness comes from it being a largely pagan country. Iceland was too far-flung to be comfortably reached by Medieval Christian missionaries, so today Icelanders are free of many of the social taboos surrounding divorce and having children out of wedlock. Non-nuclear families are the norm there, and Icelanders seem to be happier for it.
