The Garden Route, South Africa

Transfagarasan Road, Romania

This spooky stretch of highway located in Romania crosses the Carpathian Mountains was declared one of the best road trips in the world according to Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson. This 56 mile long highway takes about four hours to drive and is full of challenging turns, but drivers are rewarded with incredible views of lakes, gorges, and forests. It’s also the best way to reach Penari Castle owned by Vlad III the Impaler, who was the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
