This famed stretch of road running between Chicago and Los Angeles is a two-week, 2,500-mile drive that’s better known as the “Main Street of America.” Follow in the footsteps of the brave pioneers who ventured west to California long before the way was paved or just “get your kicks on Route 66” as the well-known song advises.

The Garden Route, South Africa

The quaint name doesn’t do the wild, breathtaking beauty of this highway any justice. Known as “The Garden Route,” this 190-mile, 2.5 hour drive between Mossel Bay and Storms River along the Southwestern coast of South Africa offers views of everything from beaches, to mountains, to forests, to rocky coves without a single boring garden in sight.

Ring Road, Iceland

Travellers are starting to catch onto the fact that Iceland has a lot to offer as a tourist destination, especially when it comes to scenery. Iceland’s main road Route 1 otherwise known as Ring Road will take you all around the island on an 828 mile trip that can take up to two weeks. Along the way you’ll see glaciers, fjords, lakes and coastal views that will take your breath away.

Transfagarasan Road, Romania

This spooky stretch of highway located in Romania crosses the Carpathian Mountains was declared one of the best road trips in the world according to Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson. This 56 mile long highway takes about four hours to drive and is full of challenging turns, but drivers are rewarded with incredible views of lakes, gorges, and forests. It’s also the best way to reach Penari Castle owned by Vlad III the Impaler, who was the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
