Traveling With a Disability
Be flexible
Here in the United States, the Americans with Disabilities Act ensures that all disabled people are treated equally under the law and most facilities are built with accessibility in mind. Unfortunately not all countries are as progressive and do not have laws to protect individuals with disabilities. Accessibility can also mean different things in different countries; for example in America we might consider a building accessible if it is equipped with a ramp or a lift but in some places, it might mean two eager bellhops who are willing to carry you up a set of stairs. In a perfect world, all places would allow people with disabilities to be mobile on their own but unfortunately that isn’t always the case. Have a flexible definition of “accessible” while traveling and be willing to ask for help when you need it.
