Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa with an area of nearly 70,000 sq km (it’s also the second largest in the world!). The first Briton to document it was John Hanning Speke, who named the river after Queen Victoria in 1858.

Travelers can go on many different boat tours around the lake. A popular choice is to go watch the sunset, birdwatch, or go fishing for Nile perches, which can weigh up to 80 kg. It’s also possible to visit the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, which is home to 49 orphaned chimps.
