9. Kerala Backwaters – India
Kerala has been an important region in India for thousands of years and it was a major spice exporter in 3,000 BCE. However, what fuels the economy nowadays is ecotourism around the magnanimous backwaters.
The backwaters are a network of canals fed by 38 rivers with a length of 1,500 km, including five large lakes. Travelers stay in house boats called kettuvallams, which were used to transport grains in the past. It’s a nice place to relax and enjoy the surrounding nature and fish, if one is so inclined.
