15 Jaw-Dropping Castles in Bavaria

King’s House on the Schachen (Schachenhaus)
This small castle is only reachable by a three-to-four-hour hike starting either from Garmisch-Partenkirchen or Elmau. The ascending walk that provides an astonishing view of the Zugspitze will certainly be worth the effort.
The King’s House on the Schachen features a luxurious and extravagant interior which stands in stark contrast to its simple, modest exterior. Schachenhaus was built by Ludwig II of Bavaria between 1869 and 1872 and served as the king’s retreat and hunting lodge.
