4. Vooruit Arts Centre
Dating from 1913, this elegant complex was projected by the architect Ferdinand Dierkens. With a gracious Art Nouveau touch, Vooruit Arts Centre has 11 floors, 367 rooms and 2 facades. Considered as a counter-move to the Ghent Universal Explosion, the palace is one of the socialist movement’s main accomplishments.
With the purpose of being the worker’s opera house, the building used to have a resonant motto, too: Art ennobles. The masterpiece served as a place for cultivation, debate and diversion for the people in Ghent. Nowadays, it hosts concerts and socio-cultural events attended by both locals and tourists.
