The Most Beautiful University and College Campuses in the World

Peking University

The first modern national university established in China was Peking University, which was founded in 1898. Its esteemed alumni include Mao Zedong and Chen Duxiu. Although the university campus was originally located within the Forbidden City, it was moved in the early 1950s to its current location in the Haidian District of Beijing. Many of the university buildings have been designed to fit in with the new environment, which were originally Qing Dynasty imperial gardens. Throughout the grounds, much of the original imperial gardens have been maintained, which include beautiful pagodas, lakes, and walking paths that wind around elaborately sculpted garden beds. To enter the campus itself, you must pass through one of the four gates located on the North, East, West, and South ends of campus. The West Gate is widely considered the most beautiful — its painted murals make it a popular tourist attraction.
