The Most Beautiful University and College Campuses in the World
University of Virginia
It isn’t every day that one of the country’s founding fathers also founds an institute of higher learning. The University of Virginia was founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson, who played an active role in no only the foundation of the school’s academic programming, but also designed many of the buildings in his distinct style, which is now known as Jeffersonian. The central area of the school is known as the Academical Village, and encompasses most of the central green space and the neighboring residential and academic buildings like the Rotunda. Flanking the Rotunda are ten pavilions, which are separated from each other by Jefferson’s serpentine walls, which serve as an example of his famous style, which is simultaneously utilitarian and elegant.
