7. Atacama Desert – Chile
The Atacama Desert stretches for 600 miles from Peru into northern Chile, an area that is generally lifeless, but today supports almost a million people. Parts of the area have not had rainfall in recorded history, but enterprising South Americans have coaxed the landscape into producing food through drip-irrigation and snowmelt streams from the mountain areas.
