The town of Cork, which is the second largest city in Ireland, has existed on the exact same spot since the first inhabitant, Saint Finbar, founded a monastery there between 550 and 620 AD.
Cork is surrounded by water – the River Lee flows through the city, and empties into Lough Mahon, which flows all the way to the Celtic Sea. If you’re staying there, pick a hotel in the city center – everything from there is walkable, including many of Cork’s cozy Irish pubs.
