3. Champasak, Laos
Inside the province of Champasak, in Laos, lies the ruins of an ancient Khmer kingdom that once stretched all the way to Thailand. The Khmer ruins of Vat Phou are the most spectacular site in the region, and they’ve been left almost completely untouched, which means that you can get as close as you want.
Pakse is the biggest town in the area, and it’s about an hour drive from here to Vat Phou. After you’re done exploring the ruins, you can head back into the city and grab some food at the bustling Pakse outdoor market.
