10 Bizarre Festivals You Won’t Believe Exist
Cheese Rolling Festival, England
If you have already bought your preferred type of cheese for Stilton, England’s annual Cheese Rolling Festival, you will have to find a different use for it (maybe make grilled cheese?).
According to the official Stilton Parish Council Facebook account, no cheese will be rolling down the streets this year as the event is cancelled due to a number of reasons, one being “lack of enthusiasm.” This event had been running (or should I say rolling) for over 50 years. This annual event took place on the first Monday of May (a bank holiday in the United Kingdom). It involves several teams rolling a wooden cylinder in the shape of a Stilton cheese and steering it towards the finish line.
However, you’re in luck, rolling of cheese is not just native to Stilton, England, if you make your way to Gloucestershire, England (again, during May Day) you will come across a hill that is looking for participants to race beside a nine-pound cheese wheel (skill is required as conquering the hill and the wheel is no easy task).
No one is sure why these cheese-rolling events take place.
