Miracle on the Hudson

Quick thinking by one brave pilot turned what could have been a national tragedy into a heroic story with a very happy ending. Captain Chesley Sullenberger was piloting US Airways Flight 1549 headed for North Carolina out of New York’s LaGuardia Airport when the plane flew through a flock of migrating Canadian geese. One of the birds was sucked into the engine, causing the plane to lose power as it flew over New York City. Narrowly avoiding a major disaster that would have had an undoubtedly devastating toll, Captain Sullenberger managed to instead crash-land the plan in the Hudson River.

Some passengers waded through knee-deep water to escape, while others stood on the wings of the plane waiting to be rescued. The only injuries reported were a pair of broken legs and the Captain was named one of Time Magazine’s “100 Most Influential Heroes and Icons” of 2009.
