Happy Hippies in Eureka, California
Eureka’s Locals
Meanwhile, just blocks away were the odd people you would hope to encounter in a town like Eureka. The street jewelry vendors held frightening resemblances to past Johnny Depp characters. Nobody making their way through downtown would be able to miss the congregation of “travelers,” shall we call them, happily singing and drinking beverages out of paper bags. The amazing part is that it never felt unsafe. Even with the prevalent occurrence of transients through the small downtown, they were friendly and for the most part minded their own business, which was a breath of fresh air.
I had a handful of interesting run-ins with these local people and I have to say, for whatever oddities and weirdness they display, the people were incredibly welcoming, helpful and friendly. That’s a true hippy. Whether business owners, travelers or local residents, everybody had a smile and I could tell that people were generally happy with the slow, steady pace of life on the Arcata Bay.
