My grandparents have traveled extensively since my grandfather retired, going even as far as Japan! So it’s a definite option. The biggest drawback is that you will be lowest on the list of passengers. So least likely to get seats and most likely to get bumped off a plane at the last second. But a mark in your favor is your free schedule — you won’t be as tied to dates as those people with work and school schedules!
