Hanging Coffins of Sagada
Next, we venture to the Philippines to take in the unsettling sight of the Sagada Hanging Coffins. Yes, they are actually hanging coffins. The mountainside is covered in them.
Why? Well, it’s part of an ancient burial tradition that is practiced by the members of the local Igorot tribe. When one of their own passes, the tribe nails the deceased’s coffin to the mountainside for all to see (and mourn). They don’t do it as often now, but the previous coffins remain if you care to see them.
