Creepy Tunnel Systems Beneath Major Cities

12. Prohibition tunnels underneath Detroit
Detroit was a city alive with crime during the prohibition era of the United States. Since it was so close to Canada, many bars in Detroit secretly remained open, as their proprietors could smuggle booze down from Ontario to keep their customers happy. While much of this smuggling happened by boat, once they got the goods into Detroit, bar owners needed places to hide their liquor, and to arrange for the quick exit of their customers if the bar was ever raided. Many bar owners dug tunnels leading from their premises to a safe place elsewhere. One bar called Tommy’s had a tunnel that led straight to Fort Street Presbyterian Church across the road.
