9. The Hoosac Tunnel in Massachusetts
The Hoosac Tunnel held the honor of being the world’s second-largest tunnel for 40 years after it was opened. Unfortunately, the ambitious drive that led to its construction also contributed to the death of 195 workers during the 24-year process of it being built. There were multiple accidents that plagued the tunnel during construction, but the worst was in 1867 when gas fumes met a lit candle and caused a massive explosion.
