6. Abandoned Australian railway tunnels
There was once a railway network that stretched for miles underneath Sydney, Australia. It was shuttered, but instead of demolishing it, the government let it deteriorate. Everything is still there — the signage, the tracks, and the waiting areas — but it’s been completely taken over by nature. One area optimistically called Lake St. James is a stagnant body of water that has covered what was once Macquarie Station. Now, it’s home to a colony of gigantic albino eels.
