Mini Guide to Thailand

Loy Krathong

Loy Krathong usually happens in November and is meant to be an offering to the river goddess for bringing life to people. Thai people also use the time to send away their bad luck down the rivers, so they sometimes put fingernails and hair in the krathong (small leaf dish) representing negative thoughts.

In Chiang Mai, the festival coincides with Yi Peng, which is time to “make merit,” so people launch floating lanterns into the sky to symbolize the “letting go of the misfortunes of the previous years.”
