This ancient forest, located on the tiny island of Yakushima in the southern part of Japan, was the inspiration for Studio Ghibli’s amazing masterwork Princess Mononoke. While it has been significant regionally for years, and has been continually explored on ancient pathways that have been in place since the 17th century, it only recently received international attention when the movie’s lead artist attributed his beautiful artwork to his time spent drawing deep in the forest.
