Myth and Legend: Supernatural Landmarks of Japan

Okayama and Megijima Island

One of the most charming legends in Japanese history has to be Momotarō, the hero child who grew out of a peach that was found floating down a river. He came to life after an elderly couple, who had been wishing for a child, pulled the peach out of the river, and he sprang out from the peach’s sweet center.

He is credited with defeating ogres who were causing trouble in his hometown of Okayama, and so people in the town still honor his contributions with pride. Many tourists also visit Megijima Island, which is thought to be the site of his battle with the ogres.
