The Best American Restaurant Rivalries of All Time
Philly Cheese Steak: Geno’s Steaks vs. Pat’s King of Steaks
Most restaurant rivalries begin with the older, more established restaurant that invented the original dish being challenged by a younger, hipper place who assert that they’ve “perfected” what the older restaurant invented. This is exactly what is happening in Philly.
Pat’s King of Steaks was founded in 1930 by Pat Oliveri, who first came up with the idea for Philly cheesesteak. Geno’s Steaks opened across the street from Pat’s in 1966, and they claim that their cheesesteak is better than the original. Pat’s menu is much more varied, and you can order tons of toppings, while at Geno’s, you’re limited to either cheesesteak or roast pork.
Most people in Philly tend to stick to the original, although Geno’s is a good option if the line is too long at Pat’s.
