The Best American Restaurant Rivalries of All Time
Chicago Deep Dish: Giordano’s vs. Lou Malnati’s
In terms of regional food variations, Chicago deep dish pizza has to be one of the most interesting. If you’ve never had it before, you may be shocked when it arrives at your table inverted with cheese on the bottom and sauce on the top. Chicagoans are proud of their indulgent pizza, and jealously assert that it’s the best pizza in the United States.
The biggest Chicago deep dish pizza rivalry right now is between Lou Malnati’s and Giordano’s. Lou Malnati’s is definitely older since it opened in 1971 while Giordano’s didn’t start slinging slices until 1974. Each restaurant succeeds and fails at different aspects of the dining experience. The fresh-tasting sauce at Giordano’s tastes better but their pies are more expensive, while Lou Malnati’s has more options for sizes but their crust is often considered inferior. Overall, this one’s a tie.
