The Best American Restaurant Rivalries of All Time

Chimichanga: El Charro Café vs. Macayos

In many restaurant rivalries, the enmity stems from the fact that both restaurants claim to have invented the food that they’re fighting about. In Arizona, there are two restaurants, El Charro Café, and Macayos, who both claim to have invented the chimichanga in their kitchens. Both claim that the dish came about because their chef accidentally dropped a loaded burrito into the fryer.

Today, they both maintain their stories, but the chimichangas that they’re churning out are quite different. At El Charro, the chimichanga is stuffed with carne seca — dried pulled meat — while at Macayos, they offer either shredded beef or chicken, with classic Southwestern chile relleno sauce on top.
