Dohány Street Synagogue – Budapest, Hungary
This unique synagogue is constructed in the Moorish Revival style, which brings a taste of the Middle East and Spain to the classical European streets of Budapest, Hungary. It was completed in 1859, and for many people it brings back strong feelings – it borders the edge of the Budapest Ghetto, where Jews were segregated from 1944 until the end of the Second World War.
The synagogue itself is massive – you can tour the inside, as well as the connected Jewish Museum and Memorial. The Jewish Museum, which sits a little bit behind the Synagogue, was built on the site where Theodor Herzl’s house once stood, before he became the founder of the State of Israel.
