Hassan II Mosque – Casablanca, Morocco
This ambitious building, which is located over both land and sea, was built as a tribute to King Mohammad V of Morocco, but ended up being named for the monarch that organized its construction – King Hassan II.
The structure is the largest mosque in Morocco, and the 13th largest in the entire world. It’s home to the world’s tallest minaret, which stands over 689 feet tall. 25,000 people can fit inside the mosque at one time, with another 80,000 on the grounds outside. There are even special sections cut out of the floor in the prayer hall so you can look down into the churning water of the Atlantic Ocean.
