For the first 15 years of its existence, the Bolshoi only permitted the works of Russian composers to be presented on this stage, but relaxed those rules in 1840.
The current theater that stands on this spot was extensively renovated, and all the original imperial fixtures returned to where the Soviet hammer and sickle were once carved.
