When a friend or family member comes to visit near the end of your stay, you can awe them with your killer public transportation, cultural nuance, and language skills. My favorite moment was probably a cab drive with a Scottish cabby. I engaged him in conversation, and after my mom and I got out the car, she turned to me with wide eyes. She told me, “I’m so glad you talked to him. I didn’t understand a single thing he said.”
