When you’re on your own (or with other foreigners) traveling can feel a bit like that flamingo gif. You know the one.

With a local, suddenly all things start to fit together. I was fortunate to have one such guide in the form of the head of the international students’ club. When he took some of us students on a road trip to Wales, he knew all about the attractions we passed — from the random medieval cities to the best butcher shop en route.
