Officer Jason Dowd, JetBlue Flight 191
Fast thinking and a knack for tricks allowed co-pilot Jason Dowd to save a plane with over 100 passengers on it. JetBlue’s Flight 19 lead pilot began suffering a nervous breakdown at 35,000 feet – after preaching in religious fervor to Dowd, the pilot then turned off the plane’s radios and made the horrific announcement over the PA, “We need to take a leap of faith.” Dowd was able to trick him into taking a washroom break, during which time he locked the cockpit doors and changed the codes. I guess it’s true – when you gotta go, you gotta go.
