Dún an Óir – Munster
Dún an Óir, located on the Dingle Peninsula, is a scenic area with lots of buried history. It was the location of the Siege of Smerwick, where a Spanish force was sent to help defend Ireland against their enemy – the British.
The Spanish retreated to Dún an Óir, but ended up being massacred by the British. Visitors to the area can still hear people crying out in Spanish, and can sometimes smell the scent of decay wafting in on the ocean breeze.
