The Funniest Town Names in the U.S.
| August 20, 2018
Hell, Michigan
Here’s another community whose travel and tourism director I certainly don’t envy. Hell, Michigan (a.k.a. Hiland Lake) is a working-class community that was built around a sawmill, a gristmill. and a distillery. It’s about 15 miles northwest of Ann Arbor, for you geography nerds out there.
How did it get its name? No, Satan doesn’t operate the town’s bed and breakfast. Some claim that the town was named Hell by happenstance, while others insist that the name originated from an off-the-cuff comment by local businessman George Reeves.
