Satans Kingdom in Vermont is one of three townships named Satans Kingdom scattered across the continental U.S. There’s also one in Connecticut and Massachusetts – but only Connecticut’s township embraces the expected apostrophe in “Satan’s.”

The origin of the Vermont town name is dubious at best. Some claim that the land belonged to a native tribe led by a man named Satan. Others claim that the town was once a hotbed for outcasts and derelicts. What I can tell you is that I’ll never be traveling there. Bad juju.
