5. Ssese Islands – Uganda
Located in Lake Victoria, Ssese Islands is actually an archipelago of 84 islands, 43 of which are inhabited. It got its name due to swarms of lake flies which breed in enormous clouds near the shores (don’t worry, they don’t bite!).
Though many tourists go there to enjoy its tranquil beaches, it’s possible to see vervet monkeys, native birds, and hippos. Swimming is discouraged as there have been recent attacks by Nile crocodiles in the area.
