Cultured Palate: Dishes from Germany

Currywurst
The creation of currywurst was a direct result of the British army’s presence in Germany following the end of the Second World War. The inventor, Herta Heuwer, owned a small wurst stand in Berlin, and was gifted a package of curry spices by an occupying British soldier. She mixed the spices in with regular ketchup and served it over sliced sausages. It became insanely popular – there’s even a museum in Berlin called the Deutsches Currywurst Museum, which tracks the development of this delicious dish.
