12. Chachapoyas – Peru
The north of Peru is often forgotten by hordes visiting Cusco and Machu Picchu; however, there are treasures to be found here. Chachapoyas is a sleepy town named after the indigenous people who lived there – it means the Cloud People.
It’s the gateway to Kuelap, the largest pre-Inca ruins in South America, featuring uniquely shaped round ancient houses. You can also take a tour to the nearby Gocta Falls, the fourth highest waterfall in the world.
