The St. Nicholas Lighthouse in Rhodes, Greece was built in 1863, but the fortress itself was constructed considerably earlier. Fearing the Ottoman invasion, the Knights of Rhodes built this fortified city in 1460. The lighthouse itself was added by the French in 1863. Today, the site acts as both a marina for expensive yachts and a destination for tourists.
