Hamelin
Every child, whether they’re German or not, has probably heard the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin. When it’s told in North America, the story leans toward the fantastical and fun – you’re usually told that the children in the story were eventually returned to their parents and lived happily ever after. The original German tale, which was actually based on historical accounts, ends with all of the children drowning in a river.
If you’re interested in folklore, you should definitely visit the town of Hamelin. To this day, it’s illegal to play music or dance on the street where the children were rumored to have been taken.
