The Rhine River
The Rhine River has always been a major player in Germanic mythology – it flows through many of the country’s major towns, and has always been a source of power and mystery. One person who was captivated by the Rhine River was opera composer Richard Wagner, who wrote his gigantic operatic epic Der Ring des Nibelungen featuring the Rhine as a central location. Water nymphs living in the Rhine are the first and last characters seen, and the river itself figures heavily into the story.
